Dominion Championships

The North Hill has supported this national competition since it began. We will continue to do so; however, for it to exceed more teams need to participate. We have held the event on the family day weekend in order to maximize available ice and flexibility; which unfortunately wasn’t needed due to low entries.   For 2012 there will be a Mens' and a Womens' event with the Club playoffs on February 7-9, 2012. Entry details will be forthcoming.  The National will be November 18-24, 2012, Scarboro Golf & Country Club (close to the centre of the universe).

To improve the event, we need to make the event more appealing to the average player (for whom the event is supposedly targeted).  First, we will move the event off the family day weekend. This coming season, the event will be held on three days in the middle of the week (Tues, Wed, Thurs Feb 7-9, 2012) which are not needed for the evening go-rounds. With these days, we have potentially six draws (2,2,2); albeit some back-to-back draws. If need be, the final games could be played on available ice thereafter.

Second, we will provide more incentive for a team to enter even though their chance of winning is slim. This could be done by running the event more like a bonspiel instead of a double knockout as previously. With a 3-event bonspiel format, we would be able to give “prizes” to more teams (depending upon entry).   The winning team gets team jackets, some expense money for Southerns and beyond; and of course bragging rights. For others, the prize(s) would be more modest.

With a bonspiel format, up to 16 teams could be accommodated in the aforementioned time frame.  If as in the past, a DKO was implemented, eight teams would take three days; plus the possibility of a deciding additional game.  To satisfy the competitive crowd (at least a little), the proposed draw modified draw drops first game losers back into the first event for another chance at the Dominion.

Rules for this event are a work in progress. It was intended to be a "fun" event; but the powers that be have caused several restrictive rules to be implemented at the Club level. The eligibility rules can be accessed here. Our current understanding is that club teams not all of the same gender can "pick up" a substitute to play lead for the entered team. That substitute must be from the same league as the team. As further clarifications/changes occur; they will be addressed here.
